Hip Hop Books: Hip Hop Culture, Society & Current Affairs

Here we feature the best books on hip hop culture, society, world issues and "human nature" (my sociology professor might kill me for using that last term).

Below I've listed some great books for studying and understanding human society and how it affects us as individuals. You'll also find great books on history, and censored news stories from around the world. Learn about the art of seduction, conspiracies, crime, the philosophy of religion, mastering the art of the "buzz" and more.

You may find a couple of these books in other categories on the site as some do cover more than one subject matter.

At the very least you'll have lots of fun reading these books and you may just learn tons about society and culture as a bonus.

Enjoy the recommendations.

Hip Hop Culture, Society and Current Affairs

  The Art of Seduction

People like J.F.K. and Tupac Shakur are two examples of mass seducers of the public. This book tackles the subject of seduction in a take-no-prisoners fashion. Touted as a "handbook on the most subtle and effective form of power" and "an indispensable primer on how to take what you want from whomever you want," this book is more than a little creepy. It will have real appeal for power mongers, gold diggers, and heartless manipulators everywhere. But of course that is not our recommended use of it.
  The Art of Warfare

"He who knows the enemy and himself will never in a hundred battles be at risk; He who does not know the enemy but knows himself will sometimes win and sometimes lose; He who knows neither the enemy nor himself will be at risk in every battle." The Art of War is filled with guidance such as this on war and battling, the other kind of battling. Mostly.
  Behold A Pale Horse

This is one of the most controversial and obscure books I have ever read. A lot of the "conspiratorial ramblings" of William Cooper are truly fascinating and deep and describe a government agenda far more sinister than most could imagine. Bill Cooper (formerly with US Intelligence) has admitted years after the first publication of this book that much of his knowledge was misinformation purposely leaked to him so as to discredit his factual findings. Bill Cooper was "accidentally" killed at his home by a police officer in 2001. That being said, take this book with a grain of salt.
Censored 2007: The Top 25 Censored Stories

This entire book series contains some of the most interesting and scary news stories that you will never hear. Here are just a few headlines from the 2007 edition, "Halliburton Charged with Selling Nuclear Technologies to Iran", "Hunger and Homelessness Increasing in the US", " Dangers of Genetically Modified Food Confirmed", "High-Tech Genocide in Congo", "US Operatives Torture Detainees to Death in Afghanistan and Iraq", "Physicist Challenges Official 9-11 Story", "US Military in Paraguay Threatens Region" and many more.
Organized Crime: An Inside Guide to The World's Most Successful Industry

This is the first fully illustrated book to profile all of the major organized crime syndicates operating in the world today. It reveals organized crime's lines of business and the methods and tools of the trade used to amass vast profits from illegal markets. The book also documents the extraordinary lives and violent times of the world's most notorious mobsters, crime families, street gangs, and syndicates...
  Reason & Religious Belief

Does a supreme being exist? Can the existence of a good God be reconciled with evil and suffering? In light of great differences among religions, can only one religion be true? I've used this book as a textbook in one of my philosophy courses and it does a great job of tackling tough topics such as faith and reason, the problem of evil, miracles, and life after death. A great introduction into the philosphy of relgion.
  The Tipping Point

The Tipping Point is that magic moment when an idea, trend, or social behavior crosses a threshold, tips, and spreads like wildfire. Just as a single sick person can start an epidemic of the flu, so too can a small but precisely targeted push cause a fashion trend, the popularity of a new product, or a drop in the crime rate. This widely acclaimed best-seller is already changing the way people throughout the world think about selling products and disseminating ideas.
  What Cops Know

This is a great book for a curious mind of any age. It is a book of true short stories and anectdotes (some as short as a few sentences) from real cops organized into six categories: The Street, Violent Crimes, Sex Crimes, Narcotics, Property Crimes, and Organized Crime. You won't be able to put this book down. Some of the stories are laugh out loud funny and others brutally horrifying. All of the stories are easy to read and offer an engrossing and uncensored look at the urban front lines.
