The Music Business (Explained in Plain English)

This is a short book, roughly 130 pages but I highly recommend it as a first read for anyone seriously interested in the music business. The subtitle says it all:"What every artist and songwriter should know to avoid getting ripped off!". If what you're after is the most complete and extensive book on the music industry then I highly suggest getting the best book ever written on the subject, All You Need To Know About The Music Business by Donald Passman.

The Vibe History of Hip Hop

The book covers a remarkable amount of history, and readers will find the answers to many of their pressing questions about hip-hop culture, such as how rap got started, who the earliest performers were, etc. Even larger issues such as the role of women as rap artists, regional rivalries, money, power, and the merge of rock and roll are examined in great detail. A discography is included for many of the popular artists profiled. Published in 1999, the book may be a little outdated, but then again I think it's safe to say that most of us can see the turn hip hop has taken since the turn of the century. The book is also filled with numerous color photographs.
