Accurate 2pac Lyrics
(June 16, 1971 - Sept. 13, 1996)
Perhaps the most charismatic and opinionated rapper in the history of the music, Tupac Amaru Shakur has become for hip hop what only few achieve in their fields...an icon.
Tupac Shakur was born Lesane Parish Crooks in the Bronx, New York City on June 16, 1971 to Afeni Shakur, a member of the Black Panthers. Serving jail time on bombing charges while pregnant with Tupac, she faced a possible sentence of up to three hundred years in prison. Acting as her own attorney, she beat the charges and was released one month before Tupac was born.
Shakur said, "I never knew where my father was or who my father was for sure." His godfather, Geronimo Pratt, was also a high-ranking Panther. His step-father, Mutulu, was a drug dealer who, according to Shakur, was not always around to give him the discipline he needed.
Tupac grew up a very expressive, intelligent, articulate and talented student, even attending a school for the arts in Baltimore. But everything would soon change when his mother was forced to move to an impoverished area of Marin County, California.
Afeni became addicted to crack and Tupac dropped out of high school and began selling drugs, something he was admittedly not good at. Through it all Tupac managed to keep writing poetry, freestyling with his friends, reading and looking for outs. It was dancing at a club where he would meet a woman who would introduce him to the man who managed Digital Underground. Soon began the rise of 2pac.
In October 1993, Shakur came upon two off-duty police officers whom he perceived as harassing a black motorist on the side of the road in Atlanta. Shakur got into a fight with them and shot both officers (one in the leg, one in the buttocks). He faced serious charges until it was discovered that both officers were intoxicated during the incident and were using weapons stolen out of an evidence locker. The charges against Shakur were dismissed.
Tupac would eventually serve nearly 9 months in jail, be shot five times in a suspicious robbery, spark a feud that would divide the hip hop nation, become the best selling rapper of the time and the first to release a double disc LP, the first to sell diamond (10,000,000 sold), raise political eyebrows, lead a successful movie career, and become one of the most influential artists of his generation.
Though much of what made 2pac's music great indeed lies in his lyrics, much more cannot be seen on paper. His intensity, his flow, his emphasis, energy, charismatic nature, drive, leadership skills and conflicting traits form a person who's significance carried beyond the field of music.
Unfortunately Tupac Shakur was murdered at the young age of 25 before being able to further advance his dreams for the disenfranchised youth of his generation.
Tupac Shakur has ammassed perhaps the largest catalog of unreleased music of any rapper to date. He has released and sold more albums posthumously than any other hip hop artist in history.
