The story of Big L is indeed a sad one. A Manhattan born Harlem resident, Big L grew to become a slick talking and at times arrogant emcee but with mic skills strong enough to back up his boasts.
Big L had the uncanny ability to mesmorize a listener with his twisted tales of poverty and riches, danger and success. This, only one of many talents he possessed as a lyricist, is evident in tracks such as "The Heist" and "Casualties of a Dice Game".
Furthermore, his talent in structuring a rhyme was impressive enough to earn him a collaboration with Jay-Z (even a rumored signing with Rockafella Records) and enough street credibility to garner him one of the biggest buzzes an underground artist had seen at the time.
On the evening of February 15, 1999 Big L was shot nine times and killed just blocks away from his Harlem home. He was 24 years old at the time of his death. It has been claimed that the murderer was originally seeking revenge on Big Lee, the brother of Big L. However, because Big Lee was in jail at the time, the killer decided to kill Big L instead.
