Black Eyed Peas are an American hip hop group from Los Angeles, who have lately enjoyed massive international pop success. As Atban Klann, they signed to Ruthless Records (run by Eazy-E), but their album was never released because their more positive and lighthearted lyrics were difficult for Ruthless to market. The group was originally composed of Will.i.am, Apl.de.ap, Taboo.
After Eazy-E died of AIDS in 1995 , Atban Klann reformed as the Black Eyed Peas and released their debut, Behind the Front that earned the group (and their accompanying live band) critical acclaim. The hit single off of Behind the Front, "Joints and Jams", was featured on the Bulworth soundtrack. Their next album was 2000's Bridging the Gap followed by their breakthrough album Elephunk which was released in 2003, featuring a new female vocalist, Fergie. Born Stacy Ferguson, Fergie used to be in a teen pop band named Wild Orchid, and who also (as a sidenote) once dated Justin Timberlake which facilitated getting him to appear on their anti-war hit "Where Is The Love?".
What is important to note with the Black Eyed Peas is their mass appeal. They have enjoyed tremendous crossover success, some might say at the expense of their street credibility. We at The State beg to differ. The Black Eyed Peas have always teetered on the edge of pop with their style of hip hop, long before Fergie joined the team. Furthermore, the last time we recall anyone testing the BEP's "realness" it ended up in a brawl that made the news.
Finally, we'd like to say about The Peas that we know they are not the most lyrical or gangster of artists and that's partly why we feature them on the site. It may serve us well to see just how a few words are actually necessary to put together a hit record still very much in the realm of hip hop.
