Canibus

Canibus, born Germaine Williams moved to the U.S. from Jamaica, a child with a self-proclaimed speech impediment. It wasn't long, however, before he not only overcame the obstacle but developed his rhyming abilities to such an extent that at his peak of stardom in 1998 this obscure underground come-up was able to shake the Hip Hop world by calling out legendary rapper LL Cool J...but that's jumping ahead.

During the first part of 1998, Canibus was managed by the main man behind the Fugees, Wyclef Jean. When Bis' debut album "Can-I-Bus" came out in 1998, the general public felt genuinely disappointed, saying that the album suffered production wise and rhetorically. Because Wyclef produced most of the tracks, Canibus blamed him for his album being a 'commercial failure' and cut ties with him. This after Wyclef produced what is now seen in the eyes of many as a one of the best diss records of all time in "2nd Round K.O.".

At the end of 2004, Canibus and Wyclef met up and settled their differences; they have since worked together on a remix of the Machel Montano song "Carnival Survivors" and it has been rumored that Canibus will be on the upcoming Fugees comeback album, set for release late 2005. This rumor, however, is only that, and considering Canibus' career as of late and his alleged blackballing by the industry, the odds of a return to the limelight now are shaky.

Canibus lyrics remain among the more complex in the game, assuring that a good many underground and mainstream fans and artists respect this infamous emcee till this day.

Most would say he won his battles with LL Cool J and Beanie Siegal while his beef with Eminem is still up in the air.

In a surprise move, Canibus decided to join the Army in 2003. This did not seem to hinder his music making at all, however.

Canibus continues to release albums since his shortlived brush with the mainstream and commands quite a loyal fanbase.

UPDATE: I must say The State has been listening to more and more of the Canibus of late and we are more than impressed. Indeed an acquired taste Canibus remains the envy of the greatest lyricists on Earth. It is as a fair warning and not as a pretencious statement that we advise listeners to posess a certain level of education before delving into the heavier Canibus material.

"A wise man sees failure as progress/ A fool divorces his knowledge and misses the logic/ And loses his soul in the process/ obsessed with nonsense with a caricature that has no content"
