Rapper Common (aka Common Sense, born Lonnie Rashied Lynn) is an emcee native to Chicago but currently living in New York who debuted in 1992 with the single "Take It EZ" from the LP Can I Borrow a Dollar?. Though popular success was virtually nonexistent, Common established a solid fanbase among underground rap fans, despite his criticism of misogyny.
In 1994 he would release Resurrection which featured the soon to be classic "I Used To Love H.E.R." an ode to Hip Hop. With all this all happening around the same time he delivered a very respectable diss in "The Bitch In Yoo" to West Coast rapper Ice Cube...Common's notoriety was beginning to peak.
In 1997 Common released One Day It'll All Make Sense, which included nu soul artists like Lauryn Hill along with rappers like Q-Tip and Black Thought. The album was critically acclaimed, and led to his major label contract with MCA Records.
With ?uestlove producing, 2000's Like Water for Chocolate was almost a breakthrough success and greatly expanded his fanbase among critics and listeners with hits like "The 6th Sense" and "The Light". His next album, Electric Circus was similarly successful commercially but less than what some fans expected, as Common strayed as far from traditional hip hop as he ever has.
With production by Kanye West and his popularity as strong as ever, Be, Common's 2005 offering is aiming to impress in a big way. It notably shows a Common more free of intellectual contstraints yet by no means watered-down. With it he has done what is hard for many established artists to do. He has gained a large number of new listeners while avoiding to alienate his original fanbase.
