Crooked I

Crooked I has called many cities home. Born in Los Angeles to the son of a Navy man, his family moved to a variety of cities across the country including Long Beach, Las Vegas, Portland, Seattle, Philadelphia and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. “I knew at the age of six that my dream was to be a rapper. I wanted to be the first kid rapper," says Crooked I while reminiscing on his younger days.

At the age of 17 while in Long Beach, California, Crooked I built a studio funded by two NFL players who wanted to get into the rap-music industry. Unfortunately, Crooked I was not extremely knowledgeable about contract negotiations, and soon left the studio and its label. Walking down Atlantic Avenue in Long Beach one day, he was contacted by Big C-Style a Long Beach native who wanted Crooked I to perform on his upcoming compilation project "C-Style Presents." After arriving to the studio with C-Style, Crooked I completed and recorded nine songs for the soundtrack. Virgin Records distributed the project and once representatives at the label heard Crooked I, they made it clear to C-Style that they wanted Crooked I as a solo artist for C-Style’s 19th Street Record label. Crooked I went on to sign with the label and released various songs on various compilations for the label.

After leaving 19th Street Records Crooked I traveled to the Southern region of the U.S and over to the East Coast to work with numerous independent artists and labels. "Business was good financially, but I wasn’t blowing myself up as a artist," Crooked I stated. He was then contacted by Big C-Style and Daz Dillinger, who had formed Dogg Pound Records. They told him they wanted him as a solo artist for the label, and his first question to them was who would be distributing the label. Daz informed him that they were going with Suge Knight's powerful Death Row Records.

By this point the infamous Suge Knight had heard Crooked I on "The Wake Up Show" while incarcerated and was impressed with the young rapper.

Crooked I signed with Dogg Pound Records/Death Row Records in 1999 and began recording material for the label. Unlike Snoop Dogg or Dr. Dre, who are essentially gangster acts, Crooked I can rap with authority about the streets on one track and showcase his unrivaled lyrical dexterity with a relentless onslaught of braggadocio boasts on the next. It’s that type of diversity that makes Crooked I such a formidable talent and an artist qualified to take Death Row to new heights, or so Suge is hoping.

Since 2000, Crooked I lyrics have blessed Death Row’s “Too Gangsta For Radio” album. On “Gangster Rap,” he teamed with Treach and Scarface, and on “Death Rizzo” he addressed the skeptics who said signing with Death Row was a mistake.

"I started hearing through the grapevine that people didn’t want to work with me on a business level any more because I was over there.” admitted Crooked I about the situation.

In 2003 Crooked I returned to The Wake Up Show to drop a freestyle over Clipse's "Grindin'" beat that has since become a CLASSIC by any standard. Crooked I is still waiting to release his debut album under Tha Row Records. But for many of Crooked's fans, patience is wearing thin.

"I plan on having the same status that a Snoop’s got, that a 2Pac’s got. I don’t want nothing less."

We'll have to wait and see.

"I didn't wanna resort to this/ But my cerebral cortex is a fortress where metaphors exist/ Hit you with the force of Morpheus after I transform my fist/ Into a hammer too heavy for Thor to lift through a course of metamorphosis"
