Dead Prez

Dead Prez is the pair of largely-underground rappers, Sticman and M-1. They have become known largely for their hard-hitting style and politically-aware lyrics, focusing on racism, activism against governmental hypocrisy and corporate control over the media including hip-hop record labels. Politically they advocate a socialist democracy.

Their debut album was Let's Get Free, which had a minor popular music hit with the song "Hip Hop" the year before it's release in 2000. With the exception of some white people claiming "reverse racism" the album was critically well-received, and included intense political snippets of prominent black revolutionary Omali Yeshitela, as well as the song, "Animal in Man," a retelling of George Orwell's Animal Farm. In 2001 they collaborated with The Coup, another politically active hip-hop outfit, to release Get Up. In 2002, Dead Prez released the independent mix tape Turn Off The Radio volume 1, followed by the release of Get Free Or Die Tryin' mixtape volume 2 in 2003. In 2004, Columbia Records finally released their latest effort, Revolutionary But Gangsta.

Revolutionary But Gangsta has been said by some to be a "sell-out" album, but by no means in the typical sense. Many underground fans claim dead prez decided to take the gangsta route with their latest LP while sacrificing their revolutionary appealing prowess. With gangsta rap beginning to rise once again, its easy to see how this may be true.

Others argue that dead prez wanted simply to not be known as just "political rappers". Nevertheless, dead prez are still a very politcally aware rap duo showing no signs of waivering in their militant (if necessary) beliefs.
