The Outlawz, Tha Outlawz or Tha Lawz are a rap group Tupac Shakur founded in late 1995 after his release from prison. The idea behind the names of each of the seven members' aliases was to reference a political enemy to America. However, Tupac famously took on the name of "Makaveli" after Niccolo Machiavelli for the group's recordings. The remaining group members include EDI Mean, Hussein Fatal, Kadafi, Napoleon, Young Noble, and Kastro.
The Outlawz are probably best known for appearing in the video for, and rapping on, the Notorious B.I.G., Bad Boy Records, Mobb Deep, ect. diss "Hit Em Up".
In 1999, they released the best of their unreleased songs with 2pac, entitled Still I Rise. For a while, they had a dispute over money with Death Row Records, but that blew over and today they are still close with Suge Knight.
They have also released four "solo" albums without 2pac, continue to record new raps for 2pac unreleased albums and have worked closely with Eminem for the soundtrack to the movie "Tupac: Resurrection."
The Outlawz have consistently shown tremendous respect and admiration towards their leader and close friend and family member, Tupac Shakur. The constantly announce themselves as "Makaveli trained soldiers" on records and in interviews.
The Outlawz are tremendously talented yet highly underrated. Their influence by Tupac is highly noticeable to an intent listener. Still, Tha Lawz remain an acquired taste to most of the hip-hop world while remaining very highly acclaimed by most hard-core 2pac fans.
Here is a snippet from their official website:
The Outlawzs resolve is remarkable. Mentor Tupac Shakur was killed in September 1996 and less than three months later, group member Kadafi was killed. Fatal and Napoleon would later leave the group. What was once a supergroup of seven of raps most promising artists had quickly been whittled down to just three: Kastro, Young Noble and E.D.I. But, as the Outlawz proclaim throughout its explosive new Outlaw 4 Life album, the group has to continue on its musical mission. We are Outlawz for life, Kastro says. This is really deeper than music. We made a bond with one another and we solemnly swore on the pact. Were sticking to the script. Nothing or nobodys going to change that.
One thing you wont hear on the new Outlawz album is Tupac. Plenty of other material with Tupac and the Outlawz, including the platinum plus Still I Rise album, exists. Therefore, the group wanted Outlaw 4 Life to be their moment in the spotlight. Its time for us to stand up on our own, Noble says. Pac did enough for us. He gave us the blueprint. Were talented and we dont need to have Pac on the album. People want to hear some new Outlawz stuff and they want to hear us on their own.
That being said, the Outlawz know that their relationship to Tupac will forever impact the way the group is perceived. So, on the on hard-hitting Cant Turn Back, the group lets everyone from fans to fellow rappers know that they dont mind people embracing and borrowing from their late mentor. He was the greatest rapper and people really studied Pac, Noble explains. Its only right the people borrow from him. Everybody borrows from everybody and Pac borrowed from people. Pac had the stuff for the streets, the real stuff you feel in your heart and the ladies loved him. He was the total package.
Everything we do is therapy, Noble says. Everything we go through, we put it into our music. We learned that from Pac. Thats what music is about, experience. Thats why some people will rather listen to oldies that whats out now. Its timeless when it comes from the heart. Were trying to make music like that.
